A reverse osmosis system uses a Multi stage filter where generally water passes through sediment and carbon filters first before passing through the reverse osmosis membrane. Then water is polished by a post carbon filter before reaching the tap.
It is recommended to replace filters every 12 months and membrane every 3 years. This will vary however with water quality and usage.
In most cases the answer is no. However if the water pressure is under 1.4 bar a pumped system needs to be installed.
